Electronics potting compounds

Hydrophobic potting compounds protect sensitive electronic components reliably from moisture, liquids, and aggressive substances. Using these compounds prevents corrosion and the formation of conductive electrolytes that can cause short circuits. These compounds also protect electronic components from mechanical stress and external influences, such as shocks and dust. At the same time, the potting makes sensitive assemblies difficult to access, thus providing effective protection against tampering. As electronic components continue to shrink, coordinated potting compounds ensure additional stability and long-lasting performance.

How to buy potting compounds: Finding the right product

Choosing the right hydrophobic potting compound is crucial for ensuring the long-term reliability of electronic systems. As components become smaller, they heat up faster and are more sensitive to heat-induced stresses and deformations. The good thermal conductivity of a potting compound supports efficient heat dissipation and increases operational reliability.

At the same time, the lower rigidity of the casting compound reduces the formation of mechanical stresses. However, a lower cross-linking density can affect the moisture barrier. This effect can be offset by the pronounced hydrophobicity of special polyurethane casting compounds or liquid rubbers (e.g., polybutadiene).

Silicone casting compounds are especially soft and ideal for reducing mechanical stress. However, they are more permeable to moisture. PU and epoxy casting compounds, on the other hand, offer better moisture barrier effects. However, epoxy casting resins have a higher modulus of elasticity, which leads to high local stresses, making them unsuitable for all applications.

Customized potting solutions for your needs

In addition to protecting against environmental influences, modern potting compounds must meet rigorous fire safety standards. Polyurethane potting compounds can achieve high flame retardancy and self-extinguishing properties—for example, in accordance with UL 94 V-0—by using suitable flame-retardant fillers.

Since these fillers are often used in higher proportions, the thermal conductivity of the potting compound typically increases as well. However, optimal flow and processing properties can still be achieved by carefully selecting suitable additives, enabling complex electronic assemblies to be potted reliably and reproducibly.
